Battens and fascias should be fixed to rafters set at centres not more than 600mm apart. They should span at least three rafters and be at least 1.2m long.
No more than one in four battens should be joined over one truss for gauges over 200mm. For gauges less than 200mm there can be a maximum of three joins in any twelve battens. Joints should be directly over rafters with the batten cut square and tightly joined . If a batten end is to be set in mortar, be sure an appropriate treatment has been applied. this is not required for dry-fix systems. Red battons are more expensive but are of a high quality that is pre-graded and meets the performance requirements of BS 5534. Long life garrentees will never be approved at metalico roofing specialists without the use of products that meet regulations.
There is a range of roof covering to suit different pitches, geographical locations and aesthetic requirements. Make sure your selecting the right roof covering and not just the preferred.
Make sure all lead flashings have soakers placed underneath any tile or slate you are having fitted unless profiled, And any large lead work fitted inside of mortar joints is finished with a flexible sealant and not pointed in to allow for thermal movement.
Incorrect pitch is another mistake that can be very costly when done wrong, especially with slates .We dont like to go below 23 degrees, But you can go alot lower as long as you apply extra waterproofing measures underneath the slate.
British Standards: In the case of slate roofing, the relevant standard is BS5534 Slating and tiling for pitched roofs and vertical cladding. British Standards are, in this case, the best source of the required pitch.
• The level of exposure at the site.
• The height of the eaves exposure is only applicable up to an eaves height of 12m).
• The length of a roof slope (the standard has two categories: slopes of less than 6m and slopes of less than 9m).
• The lap of the slates (an equation is assessed for the length of the lap).
• The size of the slates.
From BS5534 you can establish that for an average project, for example the exposure is moderate, the eaves is below 12m, the roof slope is less than 6m long and that for 500mm long slates and a lap of 113mm, a minimum pitch of 20 degrees is acceptable.
